The Bay Hill Club & Lodge, renowned today as a premier golf and country club in Orlando, Florida, has a rich history that dates back to the early 1960s. Nestled in the southeastern United States in Bay Hill, a suburb southwest of Orlando, this private golf club and hotel has become synonymous with luxury, high-quality golf, and the legacy of one of golf’s greatest legends, Arnold Palmer.
The Beginning
The story of Bay Hill began in the late 1950s, a period marked by transformation and growth in Central Florida. The land, initially part of the holdings of Dr. P. Phillips, a significant figure in the citrus industry, was found unsuitable for citrus growth due to its lack of nutrients and water holding capacity. Dr. Phillips, after selling most of his holdings to Granada Groves, a subsidiary of the Minute Maid Corporation, retained this raw land.
In 1959, the development of Bay Hill was set into motion when Tom Barnes, a native of Minnesota, and his partner, Tom Dore, a Michigan businessman, took an option on the land. They envisioned creating a championship golf course on this tract of land characterized by natural hills, valleys, lakes, and streams. By September 1960, a group of businessmen from Nashville, Tennessee, had joined the project, and the development of the golf course began.
Construction and Opening
The first 18 holes of Bay Hill (Champion and Challenger nines) were designed by Dick Wilson and built by Bob Simmons. Considered one of Wilson’s finest works, the course was distinguished by its slightly elevated putting surfaces, improving visibility and drainage. The course officially opened in late 1961, marking the beginning of Bay Hill as a prominent golf destination. The construction of the course also included the planting of Tifway (Tifton 419) Bermuda grass, a first for golf courses.
Arnold Palmer’s Influence
A pivotal moment in the club’s history occurred in 1965 when Arnold Palmer played and won a charity exhibition tournament at Bay Hill. Palmer’s profound love for the course led him to express a desire to own it. In 1970, Palmer took a five-year lease with an option to buy. By 1975, he had taken full ownership, significantly enhancing the club’s stature and facilities. Palmer’s influence transformed Bay Hill into a world-class golfing destination.
Hosting the PGA Tour
Since 1979, Bay Hill Club & Lodge has been the proud host of the Arnold Palmer Invitational, an annual PGA Tour tournament held each March. This event has further cemented the club’s status in the world of golf, attracting top golfers and golf enthusiasts from around the world.
